Promoting World Youth Day (WYD) can be challenging, especially when conveying that it is more than a retreat or a tour abroad. This global faith event, which brought together 1.5 million people in Lisbon, Portugal, is a unique celebration that aims to evangelise young people through various media. From meeting Pope Francis to participating in an overnight outdoor vigil along the coastline, WYD offered an unforgettable experience beyond a traditional religious pilgrimage.
A Curiosity Festival
During my time in Portugal, with Fr Patrick D’Souza and a group of 30 young people from London, UK, with Goan connections, I witnessed the curiosity that WYD sparked among onlookers. As groups worldwide waved flags, sang, and danced in joyful demonstrations of faith, locals couldn’t help but wonder what was happening on their streets. Many had heard about the event but never imagined it would be so massive. As I shared my reasons for attending, I discovered that my curiosity extended beyond the event. People were searching for work or starting a new life in Portugal, and they were intrigued by the Catholic Church’s role in organising such a significant gathering. From that moment on, I began referring to WYD as a curiosity festival.
Connection Matters
WYD is a place where unexpected connections are made in unusual settings. Initially, there was hesitation among the youth to approach pilgrims from other countries. However, within 24 hours, I witnessed young people from different nationalities and ethnicities meeting and exchanging symbolic tokens. Language was not a barrier to communication, as we stayed with host families who welcomed us as if we were part of their own family. Tears were shed when it was time to say goodbye, and many host families extended open invitations for future visits. These connections, formed despite language barriers, provided a lived experience of faith and culture, showcasing the power of love, actions, and smiles to connect people.
An Epicentre of Encounters
WYD serves as an epicentre of encounters, bringing together young people from all over the world. The exchange of tokens unique to each country or faith tradition creates lasting memories. Conversations can happen anywhere and anytime, whether in a public toilet, on the high street, or while waiting to collect food. Meeting priests, nuns, deacons, and bishops in unexpected places is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. And when the Pope speaks, silence falls upon the millions gathered, creating a profound moment of unity.
Commitment along the Journey
The theme of WYD, “Mary rose and went with haste,” invites participants to commit to serving others and embark on the arduous journey of faith sharing. Pope Francis encourages young people to become entrepreneurs of joy, not administrators of fear. Witnessing youth gain confidence to become influencers of goodness and share the story of Jesus is truly inspiring. The commitment is evident throughout the event, with Rise Up Meetings, talks on important issues, and various activities that foster compassion and unity. WYD provides an opportunity to experience the celebration of faith on a global stage alongside peers, leaving a lasting impact on both individuals and the host city; as Francisca Araujo, a WYD volunteer, puts it, “We will never look at our city (Lisbon) the same way as before. We gave God a home in our city.”
World Youth Day is a unique and transformative experience that defies expectations. It is a religious pilgrimage that celebrates faith, connection, and commitment. By participating in WYD, young people can become influencers of goodness and share the story of Jesus with the world. The young people are looking forward to WYD2027 in Seoul, Korea, to narrate even more stories of faith.
